Hilton Head Island has cornered the market on romance with its serene sunsets, light ocean breeze, swaying palmetto trees and miles of pristine sandy beaches. And more destination weddings are taking place on the foot-shaped island than ever before.
“Weddings have changed over the years,” said Charlie Clark, vice president of communications for the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. “From weddings with a ceremony and reception in one night to these weeklong extravaganzas, people are looking to make the wedding a family reunion or vacation.”

Ashley Rhodes works a little differently than most wedding planners.
“I hold everyone’s dresses — I’m kidding,” she says, laughing. “Actually, I’m not kidding.”
As the conductor of the nuptial orchestra, Rhodes organizes the vendors, the venues and the couple-to-be in preparation for their big day — even if that means covering a guest with an umbrella and not herself on a rainy wedding day.
It’s this kind of attention to detail brides should seek out in a wedding planner, Rhodes says. If possible, always conduct a one-hour, face-to-face interview.
“Make sure the wedding planner has your best interests at heart,” Rhodes says. “You're going to be with this person for six months. You need to feel comfortable.”
